Determination ofinterfacial temperatures under extreme pressure conditions
نویسنده
چکیده
Interfacial temperatures attained in a pin and v-block apparatus under extreme pressure (EP) conditions were measured using pins made from either copper or an aluminum alloy from the asymptotes in the curve of removal rate versus applied load since these have been shown to correspond to the temperatures at which the interfacial material melts. The interfacial temperature rise was proportional to the applied load, where the proportionality constant a = A# where # is the interfacial friction coefficient and A a geometrical constant which has been previously measured for steel pins and v-blocks lubricated by chlorinated hydrocarbons dissolved in a poly a-olefm as 2.3 40.3 K/N. Values of A measured when using the aluminum alloy (2.4 40.1) and for copper (2.1 -40.2) were in good agreement with this measurement and indicated that interfacial temperatures in excess of 1000 K can be attained during EP lubrication. Finally, the rate of material removal in the pin and v-block apparatus can be related to the metallurgical properties of the pins.

Experimental strategies for the investigation of low temperature properties in granitic and pegmatitic melts
The physical behavior of silicate melts during the final stages of intrusion in the earth's crust are poorly understood. In particular, the low temperature limit of igneous petrogenesis is poorly constrained. The extreme differentiates of granitic magmatism that lead to pegmatite genesis span a very large range of composition not normally considered to be within the domain of igneous melt compo...

The number of studies on extremophilic organisms has grown exponentially in the last few years. These exotic organisms (extremoplilees) are adapted to living at 100 c. In volcanic springs, at low temperatures in the cold polar seas, at high pressure in the deep sea, at very low and high ph values (ph 0-1 or ph 10-11) or at hight salt concentration (35%). Recent developments clearly show that ce...

متن کاملPrebiotic cell membranes that survive extreme environmental pressure conditions.
Attractive candidates for compartmentalizing prebiotic cells are membranes comprised of single-chain fatty acids. It is generally believed that life may have originated in the depth of the protoocean, that is, under high hydrostatic pressure conditions, but the structure and physical-chemical properties of prebiotic membranes under such conditions have not yet been explored. We report the tempe...
